AM I A CANDIDATE FOR HIFU?
HIFU is effective in treating localized prostate cancer. HIFU is FDA approved in the USA for prostate tissue ablation. The entire prostate gland can be treated if necessary, based on the total amount and location of cancer in the prosate gland. In approximately 50% of men, the cancer is located in only a region of the prostate gland and MRI targeted Focal or partial gland HIFU treatment is possible. In cases of recurrence after radiation therapy, HIFU is possible as a secondary (salvage) treatment if the recurrence is diagnosed early and there is no spread of cancer outside of the prostate.
In general, the best candidates for HIFU have early, localized prostate cancer, an average size prostate, and desire a less invasive treatment that has a low risk of urinary leakage and erectile dysfunction. When cancer is confined to specific region of the prostate, Focal or Targeted HIFU treatment is possible. MRI Fusion Guided HIFU using the Scionti MMM HIFU technique represents the most advanced technique where an MRI Image of a tumor, confirmed by targeted biopsy, is used to design and guide HIFU treatment to the tumor in the prostate resulting in very low risks of urinary leakage or erectile dysfunction.
Several factors are important to determine if you are a good candidate for HIFU treatment.
The following factors are considered in determining candidacy for HIFU:
- Age
- Overall Health
- PSA at diagnosis
- Most recent PSA
- Gleason Score
- Number of cores positive on prostate biopsy
- Prostate volume and dimensions
- MRI findings
